What it is
The Pupil Premium Grant is additional funding that state funded schools in England receive, specifically to improve the educational outcomes of pupils who are disadvantaged. The aim of the funding is to help those who face extra barriers to achieving their potential.
Who is entitled to it
Pupils attract Pupil Premium if they fall into one or more of these categories:
- They are eligible for free school meals (FSM) or have been eligible in the past 6 years (known as Ever 6).
- They are looked after children (in the care of the local authority) or previously looked after (including adopted children).
- They are children of service families (the service pupil premium element).
Funding amounts for this academic year
For the 2025-26 financial year, the funding rates from the Department for Education (DfE) are as follows:
| Eligibility category | Secondary (Yr 7-11) |
| FSM/Ever 6 FSM | £1,075 |
| Previously looked-after children / children looked after by local authority | £2,630 |
| Service children element (Service Pupil Premium) | £350 |
How we use the funding at Walton-le-dale High School
At Walton-le-dale, we use the Pupil Premium funding to:
- Provide targeted academic support (e.g., small-group tuition, mentoring) for pupils identified as disadvantaged.
- Improve access to enrichment activities (e.g., educational visits, clubs, enrichment, resources) so that all pupils can benefit.
- Support wider pastoral and wellbeing needs (such as attendance, engagement and readiness to learn).
- Monitor the progress of disadvantaged pupils and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, adjusting as needed.
We publish an annual Pupil Premium Strategy Statement, showing how we intend to spend the funding, and the impact of our spending in previous years.
